John 1:1–5 — The Word Before Creation

+Adult Bible Study by Rhoades Well Traveled Ministries
Lesson 2
John 1:1–5 KJV

Introduction

Before Genesis ever said, “In the beginning…,” the Gospel of John pulls back the curtain and shows us what existed before the beginning. John reveals that Jesus Christ — the eternal Word — was not only present at creation but was the very One through whom all things were made.

Where Genesis shows us the creation of the world, John shows us the Creator Himself.

These five verses anchor our faith in the eternal nature of Christ, His divine authority, and His unchanging role as the Light that shines into every dark place. This passage reminds us that Jesus is not just part of the story — He is the story. He is the Word, the Life, and the Light.

Study Commentary

“In the beginning was the Word…” John intentionally echoes Genesis 1:1. He wants us to understand that Jesus did not begin in Bethlehem — He existed from eternity. The “Word” (Logos) means the full expression of God’s mind, heart, and purpose. Everything God wants us to know about Himself is revealed in His Son.

“…and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” This is one of the clearest declarations of Christ’s divinity in all of Scripture. Jesus is distinct from the Father, yet fully God. Not created. Not secondary. Eternal and equal.

“All things were made by Him…” The same Jesus who walked the dusty roads of Galilee is the One who spoke galaxies into existence. Every star, every mountain, every breath — all created through Him. This truth gives believers confidence: the One who saves us is the One who sustains the universe.

“In Him was life; and the life was the light of men.” Jesus is the source of both physical and spiritual life. His light reveals truth, exposes sin, guides our steps, and brings hope into every dark corner of our lives.

“And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.” Darkness cannot overcome the light of Christ. The world may resist Him, reject Him, or misunderstand Him — but it cannot extinguish Him. His light continues to shine, calling people out of darkness into His marvelous light.
